Removing Mold from Leather

Have you ever been is a situation that you was going to a nice restaurant and when you pulled you leather jacket from the closet you noticed that is was covered with mold. At this time many emotions ran through your mind and you ask the question: What am I going to do about it and how did this happen. Leather is a porous material and perfectly suitable for mold growth. Most of the leather products we used in our home such as jacket, shoes, bags, and furniture can be prone to mold and mildew.

Here are some tips to remove mold from leather:-

q       First place the leather object outdoor in the sunlight. If there is no sunlight then you can use hairdryer to dry it.

q       Remove the surface mold with a damp cloth.

q       Allow the leather again to dry.

q      After drying mix equal part of water and alcohol. Apply the mixture in a cloth and scrub the entire leather surface.

q       Finally keep the leather object outside air to dry.

Now your leather goods are again in usable position. But you have to protect your valuable leather product from mold. There are some tips for preventing mold from leather.

  1. Always clean the leather on a regular basis. Grease or oily substance from the kitchen can contribute to mold growth.
  2. Get rid of the dampness in the room. Dampness in the house can create mold.
  3. Control the moisture in your house. Use dehumidifier to control moisture.
  4. You can put some mold killing crystal in the closet or in the bags where you store the leather products.

Humidity is the amount of water vapor or moisture that is in the air. Increased humidity can cause a stuffy environment and is the number reason for mold to get established in your home. When you keep your humidity below 50% you typically will not have any type of mold or mildew infestation. You should consider investing in a hygrometer   that is portable and can measure the humidity in various rooms of your property.

There are many things you can do to control your humidity such as installing de-humidifiers in areas that are identified to harbor moisture, waterproofing basements, installing better ventilation in area such as the utility room, bathrooms or kitchen.

You should know in order for mold to grow it need moisture and a food source. Should you see mold on any leather products this is a caution flag that you should take a serious look to see if you have a moisture issue in your home.  When you are dealing with potential mold issues you should take precautions and consider hiring a professional to evaluate your property for mold.
